Overview
This article provides information on creating personalized nameservers for your domain at DreamHost.
Background
Nameservers direct traffic for your domain to the appropriate server. You can create custom nameservers for domains registered with DreamHost. For example, if your domain is example.com, the default nameservers are:
ns1.dreamhost.com ns2.dreamhost.com ns3.dreamhost.com
You can update these to use your own domain, like:
ns1.example.com ns2.example.com ns3.example.com
These nameservers work the same way but reflect your domain name. Follow the steps listed below to set up custom nameservers in your panel.
Using the DreamHost panel
To create a personalized nameserver in the panel:
- Navigate to the Manage Registrations panel page.
- Click the Whois Info button located next to your domain registration. If you have multiple domain registrations, check the box under the Modify Whois? column next to the domain you wish to modify and then click the Modify whois! button.
- When the Edit Whois page opens, click the Nameservers tab and then select Use another host's nameservers radio button to change your nameservers.
If these new nameservers are hosted at another company, enter the non-DreamHost IP address for each corresponding vanity nameserver. If you want the new nameservers to be hosted at DreamHost, use DreamHost's Nameserver IPs.
- Click the Save Nameservers button to save.
