Changing the web directory assigned to a domain

Overview

You can change the web directory assigned to a domain — the folder on the server that holds your website's files — from the DreamHost panel.

Background

The web directory is the folder assigned to your website on the server after adding hosting to the domain and is where the website files are located.

Changing the web directory is not necessary for the majority of websites. You only need to change it if your website requires a custom configuration.

How do I change a domain's web directory?

To change your domain's web directory:

  1. Navigate to the Manage Websites page.
  2. Click the Manage button to open Website settings, which allows you to modify various configurations for your site.
    • If in Grid view, click the Manage button at the bottom of the website box.
    • If in List view, click the Manage button at the far right of your domain name.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. Under the Website Settings section, click the Modify button to the right of the Directories subsection.
  5. In the Web directory field, enter the new directory on the server from which you want to load this domain. For example, in the text field that appears, enter example.com/blog.

This field is case-sensitive, and the folder must already exist on the server under your domain’s user.

  6. Click the Save Changes button.
