Catch-All email addresses

Overview

DreamHost does not support Catch-All email addresses — they attract overwhelming spam that degrades mail performance and delays legitimate messages. Instead, you can use Google Workspace (which offers a catch-all) or email aliases, as described below.

Does DreamHost support Catch-All addresses?

Catch-All addresses are not supported at DreamHost. This is because they are designed to accept all messages, which attracts an overwhelming volume of spam, degrades the mail system's performance for all customers, and delays the delivery of legitimate messages.

What alternatives do I have?

The following are some alternatives you can use to manage your email.

Google Workspace

DreamHost has partnered with Google to offer Google Workspace. When you add email addresses at Google, you can create a Catch-All address within their system.

How do I use an email alias?

DreamHost offers the ability to use an alias for an existing email address. This feature is enabled by default on all accounts, and there is no limit to the number of aliases you can use.

When composing a message or sharing your email address, make the following adjustment after your email username, but before the @ symbol:

  • Add the plus symbol (+), followed by any combination of letters and digits.

For example:

Type Address
Primary email name@example.com
Alias #1 name+shoppingsite@example.com
Alias #2 name+onlinebanking@example.com

All alias addresses are delivered to the email it's based on, in this case, name@example.com.

Aliases are useful for tracking whether a particular website has shared or leaked your contact information, or for proactively categorizing email signups at various websites.
