Adding DNS

Overview

The DNS page provides a graphical interface that allows you to make important changes to your domain settings. You can use the DNS page to check your current records, view the propagation status, change your nameservers, and more.

Make sure you understand how DNS works before attempting to make changes to your DNS settings. See the following article for more information about viewing and making changes to your DNS settings at DreamHost:

Opening the DNS page

  1. Navigate to the Manage Websites page.
  2. Open the DNS Settings page:
    DNS Settings
    • If in Grid view, click the 'vertical 3 dots' button under your domain. From the popout menu, click the DNS Settings link.
    • If in List view, click the 'vertical 3 dots' button to the right of your domain. From the popout menu, click the DNS Settings link.

Records

The following options appear in the Records section, which is described below:

  • Domain propagation status
  • DNS checker
  • Refresh DNS
  • Add Record

Domain propagation status

The indicator shows you if the domain is propagated. The following options appear:

  • Propagated (green) — Your site's DNS records have been updated worldwide.
  • Checking (orange) — DreamHost is checking whether your domain's DNS records have propagated worldwide.

DNS Checker

The DNS Propagation Checker allows you to select various records and then instantly check a website's current IP address and DNS record information against multiple nameservers located in different parts of the world. An interactive map and listing of cites appear, which show you the current status of the lookup for your domain.

Refresh DNS

Click the Refresh DNS button to refresh your DNS settings. An indicator appears indicating the progress.

Add Record

Click the Add Record button to make changes to your DNS records for a domain. The following options are available:

  • A
  • AAAA
  • CNAME
  • MX
  • TXT
  • SRV (advanced)
  • NS (advanced)

Your current Nameservers are listed in this section. Click the Change button to make adjustments to your Nameservers.
