Overview
This article explains how to change a password for a mail user.
If you've forgotten or lost your password
If you have forgotten or lost your mail password, you must log in to the DreamHost panel (either as the primary account owner or a privileged user) in order to create a new one. If you do not have access to the DreamHost panel, please contact the account owner for assistance.
How to change the password for a mail user
There are two places where you can change your email password: either in your DreamHost account panel or in the mailboxes panel.
Using the DreamHost panel
To change the password for a mail user in the panel:
- Navigate to the Manage Email page.
- Locate an email address you wish to adjust.
- Click the Manage button located on the right of that address.
- Scroll down to the Change Password section and select one of the following options:
- Let the system pick a new password for you by clicking the Generate strong password link.
- Create your own password and enter it twice.
- Click the Save Changes button to save your new password. The new password will take effect within a few minutes.
If you select Generate strong password to have the panel create a password for you, the new system-generated password displays.
Using the mailboxes panel
As stated above, you must already know your password to use this option. You can then log in to the mailboxes panel to update it. See this article for instructions on how to log in to the mailboxes interface.
It is not possible to update the password within Webmail. You must either log in to the DreamHost panel or the mailboxes interface. If you need to give your email users access to change their own passwords, you can assign individual privileges for them in the panel. See the Account Privileges article for details.
If you need to change a password for a Discussion List
If can no longer access a Discussion List, you must contact DreamHost support to request a password reset. You can create a ticket in your panel on the Contact Support page.
- You must send the support request from the primary email linked to your account.
- Make sure to include the list name for which you need the admin password reset.
